In the spring of 1943 Peshev stood up against the deportation of the Bulgarian Jews to the Nazi concentration camps and launched a strong defiance campaign within the Bulgarian parliament and society which led to the rescue of Bulgaria’s 50 000 native Jews. In 1973 Dimitar Peshev was awarded the title of “Righteous among the Nations” by Yad Vashem.
